HCLTech CEO’s Concern on Indian IT’s 30-Year-Old Business Model.

While speaking at Nasscom’s annual Technology and Leadership Forum in Mumbai on February 24, 2025, HCL Technology CEO C Vijaykumar declared Indian IT’s 30-Year-Old Business Model “Obsolete.” As this model completely relies on increasing staff to increase revenue, companies must change to stay competitive due to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). C Vijaykumar emphasized the need for companies to adopt a “Paranoid” mindset to stay relevant and drive growth.

Vijaykumar further stated, “Industry has seen a linear increase in revenue and workforce over the past 30 years, but this approach is now being disrupted. HCL has been challenging its teams to generate twice the revenue with half the workforce by leveraging AI-driven automation to enhance productivity.”

Vijaykumar even advocated for Indian Tech Firms to develop their large language model, concerning the relying the open-source models may be risky due to geopolitical implications. He emphasized that building proprietary models could offer a long-term competitive advantage as costs decrease.

Infosys CEO Salil Parekh Feels The Same Thing.

Echoing this concern, Infosys CEO Salil Parekh showed his agreement with Vijayakumar on the need for vigilance in the evolving technology landscape. The Indian IT industry needs to be paranoid to be relevant,” Parekh said. He also highlighted that a large part of the industry operates on input-based models and stressed the importance of shifting to output and platform-based services.

In terms of strategic growth, Parekh highlights Infosys’s substantial acquisitions to enhance capabilities, while Vijaykumar believes the company size holds less significance for HCL.
