Anupam Mittal, one of the intellectual judges of Shark Tank India, and the founder and CEO of Shaadi.com, shared a post on professional platform LinkedIn on Wednesday. In the post, he highlights that someone asked him ways to get a promotion in the job.
This led Anupam Mittal to think and question himself, when and why one should get promoted in the job, as this question was unique. In the post, he highlighted being ‘loyal’ as an employee to be promoted has become outdated, “Used to be that tenure = promotion. If you were ‘loyal’, you moved up. But times have changed.”
He even emphasized that a long time as an employee in the company isn’t responsible for leveling up. You need to focus on the steps below to move forward.

Rapid iteration based on 1st principles is the new intelligence.”
- Progress over Movement: Mittal’s second way to get ahead in any field, not only in a job, emphasizes counting for progress, not for work hours. He shares his story, “I’ve worked 90-hour weeks that delivered nothing. And seen 1 thoughtful project deliver more value than months of noise. Running in the same place is not progress. People who move up are the ones who measure their progress weekly, every week.”
- Ownership over Entitlement: He says that working in the company, one should not act like an employee, but always be like an owner, whether in decision-making or in pushing things forward. He wrote, “The new-age workplace is not a school classroom where attendance = passing marks. One has to take initiative, make decisions, be accountable and drive things forward, much like a founder.”
Most importantly, he believes, relying on being promoted by anyone is an awful way to manage your career. The best way would be to deliver the best of the results and then demand your position or compensation, what you deserve.
He writes, “In my view, waiting for your company to promote you is an awful way to manage your career. Align with business objectives, deliver disproportionate value, and then ask for that position or compensation you deserve.”
